The United Nations (UN) is officially launching the International Year of Pulses 2016 (IYP) at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy on 10th Nov 2015. Mr Vijay Iyengar, MD of Agrocorp International Pte Ltd, a leading agro commodity business company in Singapore since 1990 and Vice President of the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC) supports IYP 2016
The Health Promotion Board in Singapore has always emphasized on the consumption of protein and nutrient rich food like legumes and lentils for children and senior citizens to ensure well- balanced meals are within reach. The hope of the 2016 International Year of Pulses (IYP 2016) is to position pulses as a primary source of protein and other essential nutrients. The main aim of IYP is to help draw attention to the value of pulses and to resolve issues at consumer and production level.
GPC which has been in the forefront of the International year of Pulses campaign, calls for pulses to be prioritised in future agronomic research programs and placed at the heart of governments’ nutrition and food security strategies. As well as helping human health, boosting global pulse consumption would ALSO have the potential benefit of increasing south-south trade, as well as south-north trade; and increasing incomes rural communities.
The Year will see more than 20 partner organisations from the private and public sector across the globe work to boost consumption and production. Www.pulses.org is one such effort to get citizens to better understand the culinary, cultural and health benefits of eating pulses. I commend you and your readers take a moment to visit this web site.
